Is Fossil Fuel Finished?

Before the idealistic idea of a world without fossil fuels takes us into a complete FANTASY world, lets examine some facts.

Fact 1) There are 7 billion people on this planet. We 7 billion people do, Eat, sleep, work etc. We also consume food, resources and energy. And we create Waste, lots and lots of waste. Is the real question “are we simply overpopulated”?

Fact 2) Electric Vehicles are becoming a reality! This may make us all feel very smug and pleased with ourselves, but there is a BIG QUESTION.
WHERE IS ALL THIS EXTRA ELECTRIC ENERGY COMING FROM” or will we all be left sitting in the dark?

Fact 3) The myth of renewables.
We were promised a bright future with Solar and Wind power. Well Solar only works when the sun shines, so cannot provide reliable BASE LOAD power. Solar in fact works best when on individual homes with battery packs backed up by the grid.

Wind Energy. Well firstly let’s get it out in the open IT IS NOT COMPLETELY GREEN, due to the carbon emissions in the manufacturing process.  Additionally, it does not work if the wind stops. I would count that as a FAIL, as South Australia recently found out.

Atomic Energy. Has a lot of real and perceived problems (see Chernobyl, Fukushima). We are all waiting for the legendary COLD FUSION, which if it ever really happens would be the answer.

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY. This in fact has the ability to provide Clean Green energy at Base Load capacity (but at a cost). New technology in this area that allows for small Urban power stations of 1.5Mwh to 5Mwh. These can be in local areas and with virtually NO transmission losses. This option is being taken up in Europe as we speak.

REALITY, the cold reality is that most of the LARGE energy users (China, USA, Russia, India.) are building coal and gas fired power stations. As those countries actually cause 75% of the greenhouse gasses and related pollution there is little that we in Australia can do other than a TOKEN change which will do little more than make us feel good about ourselves.

The real question is “Do we really want to reduce our carbon footprint as a nation?” And “ Are we prepared to sit in the dark to achieve that?” OR will we just pay more to get green energy in this country, as indeed they do in Europe?

In the end Idealism is good, especially in the young, but it rarely takes the harsh reality into account.

Solutions need to be thought through, with no thought to “will I lose votes”, or “will I get votes” or “will this make me rich”

Europe is going heavily in to renewables especially Geothermal, and the EU is subsidising it. They are serious in their resolve to a green future.

It has always been my contention that if you come with a problem, you MUST also come with a REAL and VIABLE solution. Anything less is in fact Whining, and right now we need solutions.

At ANNSCA we have some of the solutions. We would like to feel that we are able to pass on to the next generations a world that is FIT, to be lived in.
